Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tareque Rahman on Wednesday chaired a review meeting on environmental pollution control at the Bangladesh Secretariat, directing law enforcement agencies to take stricter action against the indiscriminate use of polythene and plastic.
The Prime Minister also instructed the relevant ministries, divisions and agencies to discharge their responsibilities effectively to curb the use of environmentally harmful materials.
The meeting reviewed the progress of the government's initiatives to tackle environmental pollution and discussed future measures, with particular focus on expanding the use of environmentally friendly block bricks, controlling air, water, soil and noise pollution, and improving waste management.
Among those attending the meeting were Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Adviser Sheikh Robiul Alam; State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam; State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad; State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam; Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani; Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister A.B.M. Abdus Sattar; Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation Md Abdus Salam; the Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Saimum Parvez; and senior officials from the relevant ministries.
