The government has raised the prices of all types of fuel oil in the country, with diesel going up from Tk 115 to Tk 135 per litre under the new decision.

Petrol and octane prices have also been increased by Tk 20 per litre each, according to a notification issued by the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry on Sunday night.

The new prices came into effect from midnight Sunday.

Under the new decision, kerosene prices have been raised from Tk 135 to Tk 155 per litre. Petrol prices have gone up from Tk 140 to Tk 160 per litre, while octane prices have been set at Tk 165, up from Tk 145.

The Energy Division said diesel prices were last raised by Tk 15 to Tk 115 per litre on April 18. Despite an unusual surge in fuel oil prices in the international market since then, domestic prices were kept unchanged for the past five months.

The division also noted that fuel oil prices in neighbouring countries remain higher than in Bangladesh.

In its notification, the division said fuel oil prices and freight charges have risen significantly in the international market since March due to the ongoing war in the Middle East, and the upward trend still continues.

The Energy Division further said that although international fuel oil prices have more than doubled, the government had refrained from raising domestic prices in the public interest.

As a result, Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) incurred losses of around Tk 22,875.66 crore between March and August this year.
